On November 11, 2025, our collaborative paper, “Diversity, equity and inclusion in One Health could crucially support functional health security by fostering prevention, but a change in mindset is needed,” was published in One Health Outlook, on behalf of the Women for One Health (WfOH) Network.
The paper explores why putting the One Health (OH) approach into practice remains difficult, even as its relevance for global health security continues to grow. Drawing on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) principles embedded in the OHHLEP 2022 definition, the study outlines key barriers related to mindset, behaviors and awareness, conceptual clarity, structural factors, power dynamics, and governance and implementation that currently prevent OH from being applied both effectively and equitably.
Based on a scoping review and consultations with OH professionals from diverse disciplines, regions and experience levels, the paper emphasizes that the meaningful engagement of underrepresented sectors and groups such as environmental and social sciences, communities, youth, Indigenous peoples, representatives from low- and middle-income countries and especially women is essential for advancing DEI, strengthening prevention strategies and enhancing global health security.
We are proud to contribute to this growing conversation on making One Health more inclusive and impactful. This publication represents another step forward in amplifying voices across diverse communities and ensuring that equity and inclusion are central to One Health implementation.
